Tape
Art Direction | Animation

Tape is a 6-minute 2D animation that is part of my Master's thesis at Aalto University, Finland. The animation is an artistic creation on the research topic of the relationship between visual style and narrative. I am the director and animator of this project from script to production. Also responsible for directing the sound and music. The animation has won the Best Film in New Nordic Generation from the Norwegian International Film Festival Haugesund.

The animation is about a piece of tape that takes a young woman on an emotional journey through memories that used to be stuck somewhere in her mind.

The project explores the boundary of applying multiple art styles in a short time-based art. The main character’s age and mental state are depicted in three different art directions.
A playful cartoony showing the teenage heart.

A realistic tone represents the protagonist’s mature stage.

An abstract visual symbolizing hepatic emotion.

Working process

I explore alternative ways of animating by employing tangible materials such as charcoal, masking tape, and dust to create stop-motion animation. By incorporating an additional layer into the digital drawing animation, the goal is to produce a novel visual experience.
